We had a great time at Madison Square Garden tonight--we saw John McEnroe vs. Ivan Lendl, and Pete Sampras vs. Andre Agassi. The first was a best of 8 games match--McEnroe was winning 6 to 3, but he had sprained his ankle in practice, aggravated it, and had to retire due to injury. The speeches the two gave at the end made it worth it, though. (McEnroe took off his shorts and revealed super short shorts, stating he wanted to prove that he was ready to play circa 1985.)
Ash and I are both huge Agassi fans--the latter match didn't really go as we had hoped. The scoring was regular tennis scoring, but best of three sets instead of five. Though Sampras won it in two straight sets, there were some great shots that reminded us how phenomenal both these players were, and still are. In Agassi's post-match interview, he stated he had three goals:
Number 1- Don't get injured.
Number 2- Break Pete once. (Which he did.)
Number 3- Come out and say hello to the New Yorkers he loves.
All in all, a great evening with some great tennis.
